Glen Alpine Arborist Landscape Profile

Local Conditions & Tree Care Requirements in Glen Alpine, NC

Small town between Morganton and Lake James on the I-40/US-70 corridor where older homes sit on wooded lots backing onto South Mountains foothill forest — the closest town to our Old Hickory Tree Rd base.

Premier Arborist Care Minutes from Our Morganton Facility

Situated directly along the historic US-70 corridor and I-40 (Exit 100) between Morganton and Lake James, the Town of Glen Alpine blends small-town foothill charm with sprawling wooded acreage. Established in the late nineteenth century around the Western North Carolina Railroad, Glen Alpine features older craftsman and mid-century homes along Main Street, Linville Street, London Street, and sprawling hillside homesteads backing onto the northern slopes of the South Mountains.

Because Glen Alpine is situated just three to five miles west of our operating headquarters at 4894 Old Hickory Tree Road in Morganton, RAM Tree Service LLC is Glen Alpine's closest, most responsive local tree contractor. Established in March 2021 by Ron Martin and Buddy (NC LLC #2158995), our team provides rapid 5- to 10-minute emergency response and same-day on-site estimates for Glen Alpine property owners. From dismantling dead pines overhanging family carports to precision canopy pruning of legacy oaks, our certified climbing arborists deliver exceptional craftsmanship without damaging your property. Call our local shop directly at (213) 468-5153.

Foothill Drainage, Hayesville Red Clay & Soil Saturation Hazards

Glen Alpine's physical geography is defined by undulating foothill ridges dissected by natural spring-fed drainage swales and stream corridors feeding into the Catawba River and nearby Lake James. The local soil profile is predominantly Hayesville and Pacolet clay loam, characterized by a weathered subsoil over metamorphic crystalline bedrock.

While this red clay provides excellent nutrient exchange during dry periods, its tight colloidal structure creates severe drainage challenges during sustained mountain precipitation. Following extended rain events or severe winter snowmelt, water pools in the top 18 inches of soil, lubricating the root zone and dramatically reducing soil shear strength. Because shallow bedrock prevents deep taproots, Glen Alpine hardwoods and native pines develop broad, platter-like lateral root plates. When high-velocity wind gusts funnel down through the Linville River valley, saturated root plates frequently lever upward, threatening adjacent homes. Our climbing arborists conduct rigorous root flare and soil stability assessments before planning any pruning or felling operation.

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Decline & Brittle Hardwood Canopies

Properties throughout Glen Alpine—especially parcels bordering creek corridors and shaded mountain slopes—face distinct species-specific health and structural concerns:

• Eastern Hemlock (*Tsuga canadensis*) Decline: Invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (*Adelges tsugae*) has heavily impacted native hemlocks across Burke County. Once killed by the adelgid, standing hemlock wood dries out and becomes extraordinarily brittle within 18 to 24 months. Tops and lateral limbs snap unpredictably, making timely removal essential before trees become unsafe to climb. • Co-Dominant Southern Red Oaks: Many mature Southern red oaks (*Quercus falcata*) and black oaks on older Glen Alpine residential lots feature heavy multi-leader stems with included bark at the primary trunk union. During summer convective windstorms or winter ice storms, these tight crotches frequently split under torsional loading. • Virginia Pine Heart Rot: Native Virginia pines and loblolly pines often suffer from internal rot pockets and pine bark beetle damage, causing unexpected trunk failure near the base.

Low-Impact Climbing Rigging: Preserving Lawns, Stone Steps & Utilities

Residential lots throughout Glen Alpine feature beautiful terraced flower beds, legacy dogwoods, flagstone stairways, and private backyard septic drain fields. When large trees require removal, hiring contractors with heavy 20-ton cherry pickers or steel-tracked cranes invites serious lawn destruction—leaving deep ruts in soft red clay, crushing septic lateral lines, and shattering paved driveway edges.

At RAM Tree Service LLC, we eliminate equipment damage through high-angle climbing rigging. Lead arborist Ron Martin scales the tree directly utilizing rope-and-saddle systems with tree-friendly cambium savers. Working in tandem with ground technicians operating base-mounted Port-a-wrap friction brakes, every limb is suspended aloft and guided softly into controlled landing zones. We lay down high-density composite ground mats to roll heavy wood rounds across turf, ensuring your lawns, flower beds, fences, and septic fields remain completely undisturbed.

Immediate 5- to 10-Minute Storm Emergency Mobilization

Situated along the wind corridor between the South Mountains and Linville Gorge, Glen Alpine frequently experiences severe weather impacts—including violent summer microbursts, winter rime ice buildup, and tropical storms such as Hurricane Helene in September 2024. Downed timber regularly blocks family driveways along Linville Street, crushes outbuildings, or pins heavy branches across roofs.

Because our headquarters sits on Old Hickory Tree Road right next door, our emergency crew arrives in Glen Alpine within minutes of receiving your call. Arriving equipped with high-performance Stihl saws (including MS 500i fuel-injected and MS 661 Magnum chainsaws) and rigging winches, our sawyers stabilize fallen trees, relieve compression loads to prevent structural wall shifts, apply heavy weatherproofing poly tarps to punctured roofs, and prepare comprehensive photographic documentation for your homeowners insurance carrier.

Direct Owner Accountability, Free Estimates & NC LLC Credentials

When selecting a tree care contractor in Burke County, verified liability coverage and business legitimacy are paramount. Because North Carolina does not license tree contractors at the state level, homeowners must ensure their tree service carries active commercial coverage to protect against accidental damage or injury.

RAM Tree Service LLC is a legitimate North Carolina Limited Liability Company (NC LLC #2158995, established March 2021) carrying complete commercial general liability and workers' compensation policies. Co-owners Ron Martin and Buddy personally inspect each jobsite and manage the rigging, delivering upfront written quotes with zero hidden travel surcharges. We provide complete timber cleanup, branch chipping, and deep subterranean stump grinding (6 to 12 inches below ground) to leave your property immaculate. “Hazardous tree twisted over 103-year-old house after Hurricane Helene”

“We are extremely pleased with RAM Tree Service LLC. After Hurricane Helene, we had a very dangerous situation where a huge tree twisted at its base and partially fell over our 103 year old house in Montreat, NC., resting precariously in another tree. Due to the high slope, using bucket trucks and/or cranes was not an option. RAM Tree Service LLC was the only company who considered taking the job. Ron Martin climbed the tree and Buddy was on the ground. Using a system of pulleys and ropes, Ron and Buddy dismantled the tree without causing any damage to the house. In addition, they were professional, respectful, reliable, reasonable and communicated with us continually.”

Ron Martin (Owner Response):

“Thank you for taking the time to give us a review. Feedback means so much from our customers! It was an absolute pleasure meeting you and working with you on this hazardous project.”

“Tree climbing professional — no heavy equipment tearing up your yard”

“We called Ram Tree Service based on previous Google Reviews and we couldn't be happier! This company is the one that you want to use to have your trees trimmed or removed. Ron is a tree climbing professional - that means no heavy equipment tearing up your yard. He topped and dropped 5 trees on our property (and took down 3 more) - dropping each of them safely without damaging our fence line, house, or stone retaining wall. They chipped the tree limbs, cleaned up the yard, and left no sign that they had ever been on site. Highly recommended.”

“Large trees over 50 ft with 4-foot trunks safely roped and lowered”

“I HAVE had Ron take down two very large trees over 50 ft, on my rental properties in Charlotte in the last two years..these were huge trees, the last one tree trunk measured over 4 feet across...Ron does an excellent job and is very conscious about being careful of the property around the tree he is working on...He takes his time and uses his years of experience to carefully-"important word" carefully take down each limb which he ropes and lowers with the help of workers on the ground...I trust him and his people implicitly. He is very respectful and removes the debris from the tree and cleans up after all the tree removal...I would highly recommend Ron to anyone considering tree removal or tree trimming and pruning.”

“Emergency Cat Rescue 30+ feet up in a tall pine”

“Cat Rescue! We have a cat that we are temporarily fostering. She decided to climb 30 feet or more up a big pine tree. People kept telling us that we shouldn't worry she will come down on her own. After 4 days and some cold nights we realized that she was getting weak and had no intentions of coming down. So early on a Sunday morning I contacted RAM Tree service and asked if they could climb a tree to rescue the cat. They graciously agreed to help us out and were at my home in less than an hour. It was quite a sight watching him climb the ropes on a nearby tree and swinging over into the pine tree to rescue the cat. In an hour's time they had completed the task. They are an extremely nice couple who went above and beyond to help us out.”

Ron Martin (Owner Response):

“Thank you so much for the gracious review. We hope kitty is doing well and finds her forever home soon!”
