Hickory Arborist Landscape Profile

Local Conditions & Tree Care Requirements in Hickory, NC

Largest city in the region on Lake Hickory; older districts such as Oakwood have dense, mature canopies over closely spaced homes, so most removals here are rigged down near houses.

Arborist-Grade Tree Care Across Hickory's Historic & Lakefront Districts

As the bustling cultural and manufacturing epicenter of the Catawba Valley, Hickory combines dense, historic urban neighborhoods with scenic lakefront acreage along Lake Hickory. From the turn-of-the-century Victorian and Craftsman estates of the Oakwood and Claremont Historic Districts to established mid-century communities in Kenworth, Green Park, and the premier waterfront developments of Moore's Ferry, Governors Harbor, and Oliver's Landing, mature trees define the city's architectural appeal.

However, maintaining century-old urban canopies and steep shoreline hardwoods requires specialized arborist care. Heavy commercial bucket trucks cannot safely access tight side yards or sensitive lakefront bluffs. Founded in March 2021 by co-owners Ron Martin and Buddy, RAM Tree Service LLC (NC LLC #2158995) delivers master climbing and low-impact rope rigging throughout Hickory. Dispatched directly from our Morganton base via I-40 East or US-70 (a straightforward 30- to 35-minute drive), our certified arborists provide hazardous tree removal, structural pruning, and emergency response without damaging lawns or driveways. Reach Ron Martin directly at (213) 468-5153.

Cecil Clay Loam, Urban Compaction & Lake Hickory Shoreline Slopes

Hickory lies within the Piedmont-Foothills transitional zone, characterized by undulating topography and deep Cecil and Pacolet clay loam soils overlying crystalline mica schist bedrock. In urban neighborhoods like Oakwood and Highland, decades of pedestrian traffic, vehicular parking, and residential construction have caused severe subsoil compaction in the upper 12 to 18 inches of soil.

Compacted red clay restricts oxygen exchange and limits downward percolation, forcing hardwood roots into shallow, lateral orientations directly beneath the surface. When severe summer convective thunderstorms or winter rain fronts saturate this clay matrix, soil cohesion drops dramatically. Along the northern perimeter of Hickory—where residential terrain drops 20 to 40 degrees toward Lake Hickory—saturated slopes create severe downhill lean on mature hardwoods. Our team performs extensive root crown excavations, sounding tests, and soil shear evaluations before executing complex rigging operations near waterfront foundations.

Aging Willow Oaks, Pine Bark Beetles & Included Bark Hazards

Urban forestry in Hickory presents several critical species-specific vulnerabilities that demand proactive tree management:

• Over-Mature Willow Oaks (*Quercus phellos*): Dominating the streetscapes of Claremont and 2nd Street NE, many century-old willow oaks suffer from extensive internal rot (*Inonotus dryadeus* and *Phellinus robineae*). Massive horizontal scaffold limbs extending over slate roofs and roadways frequently shed unexpectedly under drought or high-humidity wind stress. • Lakefront Pine Beetle Stress: Eastern white pines and loblolly pines growing along shoreline slopes are highly vulnerable to southern pine bark beetle (*Dendroctonus frontalis*) attacks. Infested trees exhibit resin pitch tubes and crown needle desiccation, dying within weeks and requiring swift removal before timber decomposes and becomes unsafe to climb. • Co-Dominant Hardwoods with Included Bark: Native water oaks and tulip poplars across Hickory frequently develop multi-stem V-crotches with embedded bark, which split catastrophically under heavy winter ice or rotational gale gusts.

Climbing-First Rigging: Preserving Slate Roofs, Brick Pavers & Docks

Older residential parcels in Hickory often feature tight 50- to 60-foot lot widths, concrete or antique brick driveways, underground irrigation, and intricate garden landscaping. Bringing a 45,000-pound crane or tracked bucket lift into these yards risks cracked pavement, ruptured sewer laterals, and ruined turf that can cost thousands of dollars to remediate.

RAM Tree Service LLC operates using crane-free arborist climbing systems. Ron Martin ascends the canopy directly using arborist friction hitches and cambium savers. Working in coordination with ground crew utilizing base-mounted Port-a-wrap friction brakes, each limb is roped aloft, lowered under controlled tension, and landed gently away from rooflines, power drops, and garden beds. When working on Lake Hickory waterfront lots, we rig timber away from docks, boathouses, and riprap seawalls, laying down composite turf mats to roll heavy wood rounds safely off-site.

24/7 Storm Response Along the I-40, US-70 & US-321 Corridors

Hickory frequently encounters severe weather systems moving across the Catawba Basin, including destructive summer microbursts, winter rime ice storms, and major weather disasters like Tropical Storm Helene in September 2024. Fallen timber regularly crushes carports, punctures roof trusses, and blocks key thoroughfares like NC-127, US-321, and 4th Street NW.

Our emergency tree crews remain on call around the clock for Hickory property owners. Mobilizing our heavy-duty chip trucks, winches, and Stihl MS 500i and MS 661 Magnum chainsaws, we arrive quickly to stabilize uprooted trees, cut away structural loads, and secure roof openings with heavy-duty weatherproofing tarps. We also capture detailed, high-resolution damage photos to assist you in filing an expedited homeowners insurance claim.

Direct Owner Accountability, Free Written Quotes & NC LLC Credentials

Because North Carolina has no state licensing board for tree surgeons, Hickory homeowners must verify commercial insurance credentials to protect themselves from financial liability. Uninsured or amateur tree contractors pose severe risks of property damage and personal injury on complex jobs.

RAM Tree Service LLC operates as an authorized North Carolina Limited Liability Company (NC LLC #2158995), backed by comprehensive commercial general liability and workers' compensation coverage. Co-owners Ron Martin and Buddy personally review every job site, providing clear, itemized written estimates with zero hidden travel charges for Hickory and Catawba County. We offer complete cleanup, wood processing, and deep subterranean stump grinding (6 to 12 inches below grade). Call our Hickory dispatch line directly at (213) 468-5153 to book your free estimate.

“Hazardous tree twisted over 103-year-old house after Hurricane Helene”

“We are extremely pleased with RAM Tree Service LLC. After Hurricane Helene, we had a very dangerous situation where a huge tree twisted at its base and partially fell over our 103 year old house in Montreat, NC., resting precariously in another tree. Due to the high slope, using bucket trucks and/or cranes was not an option. RAM Tree Service LLC was the only company who considered taking the job. Ron Martin climbed the tree and Buddy was on the ground. Using a system of pulleys and ropes, Ron and Buddy dismantled the tree without causing any damage to the house. In addition, they were professional, respectful, reliable, reasonable and communicated with us continually.”

Ron Martin (Owner Response):

“Thank you for taking the time to give us a review. Feedback means so much from our customers! It was an absolute pleasure meeting you and working with you on this hazardous project.”

“Tree climbing professional — no heavy equipment tearing up your yard”

“We called Ram Tree Service based on previous Google Reviews and we couldn't be happier! This company is the one that you want to use to have your trees trimmed or removed. Ron is a tree climbing professional - that means no heavy equipment tearing up your yard. He topped and dropped 5 trees on our property (and took down 3 more) - dropping each of them safely without damaging our fence line, house, or stone retaining wall. They chipped the tree limbs, cleaned up the yard, and left no sign that they had ever been on site. Highly recommended.”

“Large trees over 50 ft with 4-foot trunks safely roped and lowered”

“I HAVE had Ron take down two very large trees over 50 ft, on my rental properties in Charlotte in the last two years..these were huge trees, the last one tree trunk measured over 4 feet across...Ron does an excellent job and is very conscious about being careful of the property around the tree he is working on...He takes his time and uses his years of experience to carefully-"important word" carefully take down each limb which he ropes and lowers with the help of workers on the ground...I trust him and his people implicitly. He is very respectful and removes the debris from the tree and cleans up after all the tree removal...I would highly recommend Ron to anyone considering tree removal or tree trimming and pruning.”

“Emergency Cat Rescue 30+ feet up in a tall pine”

“Cat Rescue! We have a cat that we are temporarily fostering. She decided to climb 30 feet or more up a big pine tree. People kept telling us that we shouldn't worry she will come down on her own. After 4 days and some cold nights we realized that she was getting weak and had no intentions of coming down. So early on a Sunday morning I contacted RAM Tree service and asked if they could climb a tree to rescue the cat. They graciously agreed to help us out and were at my home in less than an hour. It was quite a sight watching him climb the ropes on a nearby tree and swinging over into the pine tree to rescue the cat. In an hour's time they had completed the task. They are an extremely nice couple who went above and beyond to help us out.”

Ron Martin (Owner Response):

“Thank you so much for the gracious review. We hope kitty is doing well and finds her forever home soon!”
